It's good to see that the right judgement was made, but good lord the over reaction is ridiculous. People are actually celebrating this like they won a Superbowl. A four time super bowl champion is playing 4 extra regular season games. It's not like the NFL fixed any of its 1000s of real issues.
Also I am not talking about you Tim, just all the stuff on twitter, etc.

This is actually a landmark decision for the NFL, though. It has huge implications about the power the commissioner holds, the rights of players and Goodell's standing among the team owners. He's lost their trust, he's taken a huge blow to his power and this cements the divide between him and the players.

There are only 16 games in a regular season though, so this is a pretty big deal. With New England's issues at WR and questionable secondary, it's very possible they start the season 1-3 without Brady and with how good I expect Miami to be this year (assuming Philbin is a half-competent coach), that would have been a huge blow to that team. With Brady back, it changes everything in the AFC.

This isn't a surprising ruling given the shady as hell investigation by the NFL. It was a joke and just another example of them making up rules on the fly and seemingly doing whatever they want when it comes to punishing players. Peterson, Hardy, Rice, and Brady have now all had their suspensions either reduced or overturned. The NFL's discipline process needs serious work.

This coming from one of Goodell's biggest advocates (and I still don't think he's nearly as bad of a commissioner as people try to say he is; he's done a lot of good for the NFL, especially when you look at the several issues of other sports leagues), something has to be done with how he dishes out discipline.

@Everlong My post has more to do with people acting like they won something with this ruling. They dont know Brady, but are celebratong like tgey won something with him. The other problem here is that the Brady case should be looked at very differently from many others. It's fine that Brady's suspension was overturned, but I don't want to see a bunch of wife beaters start to challenge the NFL because of this decision. I also just want this whole thing to go away. It was ridiculous from the start and was a waste of money and time.

Yay! Once again Tom Brady and the Patriots prove they can arrogantly and brazenly do whatever they want and they aren't punished and held accountable for anything! Fuck justice, law and order, there apparently isn't a purpose for having any rules any more! This is exactly the kind of day our society should be celebrating!

Or it shows just how far we've fallen.

Did you read the report?

The judge's job was to evaluate the NFL's investigation/procedure (not to determine the guilt/innocence of Brady), which was extremely flawed. Anyone surprised by this or who disagrees with the judge's ruling likely (no offense intended) doesn't understand the case because the NFL clearly screwed the whole thing up. They were shady as hell.

I'm confused as to why you think the judge made the wrong ruling. The NFL just has a serious issue with procedure when it comes to disciplinary action. That isn't the law's problem nor is it the Patriots or Brady's or Kraft's.

4 game suspension in a 16 game season for being "generally aware" of something so minor was an unfair punishment to begin with.

That second screenshot of the decision really seals the whole case, but there's plenty of stuff in the report that basically lambasts Goodell and the NFL for the ridiculous nature of their entire investigation.

Any judge that would have sided with the NFL in this one would have been a laughingstock of his profession.

Hilarious. They're idiots.

Legal precedent is established at the appellate court level, so if (when) the courts side with the players association again, there will officially be legal precedent that the NFL is no longer allowed to punish players in this regard. That wouldn't be the case just based on this district court ruling, though it could certainly be pointed to in future cases and CBA negotiations.

Man. Berman rejected every one of the NFL's arguments.

He found Goodell guilty of refusing to hear evidence, guilty of denying Brady's team equal access to investigative files, guilty of violating the CBA, and guilty of being partial. He bitch-slapped that clown every which way. He called him "fundamentally unfair" and guilty of "dispensing his own brand of industrial justice."

It's fantastic.

"It’s fitting that Roger Goodell’s biggest failure, the one that could well end up permanently lessening the considerable power he and NFL owners have traditionally held over the NFLPA, was born out of the stupidest scandal in the history of the NFL, and perhaps all of sports."

Seriously, the whole 'Deflategate' mess has to be the dumbest sports "controversy" in the history of all sports.

There's nothing I care less about than "procedure". It's pointless and boring minutia and doesn't matter. I care about what happened and catching people that break rules. And between cellphones, nicknames and locked closets I have no doubt that the Patriots willfully and systematically broke this rule time and time again.

But it DOES matter! Due process is the only way we can prevent innocent people from being wrongfully punished, whether it's a small fine or an execution!

If procedure is pointless, then why do we bother having trials at all? Why not just throw people accused of murder directly into death row? That guy who's wrongfully accused of sexual assault, why not just send him straight to jail?

You can't arbitrarily decide who gets to benefit from legal procedure and who doesn't. That's the entire basis of the decision handed down by Judge Berman.

At this point, whether Brady did or didn't get involved with deflating balls is completely irrelevant. The NFL had no solid evidence that he did and no precedent to hand down the punishments they did, and Goodell doesn't even have the power to do what he did, according to the judge. You're honestly going to sit here and tell me we should just look past all of these complete failings on the part of the NFL just because you think Brady was guilty?

OK, an NFL rule investigation is far from a criminal case that sends someone to prison.
