I voted 50/50 based on where things stand right now.
It would be mind-boggling to me that WWE not only brings in Sting, but gives him this dark creepy entrance music, and yet
doesn't book the dream match with The Undertaker. I think it's safe to say that match is the biggest reason people wanted Sting to join WWE in the first place. And WWE has made no attempts to hide the anticipation of this match either. In every single Sting interview (including one done by WWE), he's asked about the Undertaker match. Stephanie McMahon was asked about the match. One episode of the "Monday Night Wars" series on WWE Network
specifically focuses on Sting, Undertaker, and their loyalty to WWE/WCW. Then there were the loud-as-fuck "Undertaker" chants during Sting's promo after Wrestlemania.
Yet it looks like we're on the road to Taker/Lesnar 3 at Wrestlemania (for fuck's sake). A match that could very well be Undertaker's last one. On paper it looks like a fitting end to his career - finally getting a clean, decisive victory over the man who broke the Streak, and then riding off into the sunset in his hometown of Texas in front of 100,000 fans. But nobody thinks that match should happen instead of Sting/Taker, and I don't see how Lesnar and Taker can top their match at Summerslam - which was excellent if you overlook the crap finish.
So I don't know. I'm hoping Lesnar and Taker have their rubber match at Survivor Series, which is a possibility but not a likely one. I find it hard to see a match that "big" not being done at Wrestlemania. Maybe Undertaker wants his last match to be with someone he knows he can work well with (Brock Lesnar), and not an unproven partner like Sting. Then there's the possibility that Taker DOESN'T retire at Wrestlemania 32 and faces Sting the following year. But then, these guys aren't getting any younger so why risk their bodies giving up on them when you could do both Lesnar/Taker 3 AND Sting/Taker within the next seven months? And there's just not gonna be a better place for Taker to retire than at Wrestlemania 32.
Anyway, that was my official response to the thread question. Now for my thoughts on Sting/Taker as a reality, I think it could be a good "spectacle" match depending on which Undertaker shows up - Good Summerslam 2015 Undertaker or Bad Wrestlemania 30 Undertaker. It doesn't have to be fancy, just 15-20 minutes of brawling with both guys hitting all their signature moves, mixed in with some theatrics. That should be a fun match that the live crowd will cheer for. The match isn't really the selling point though, at least for me it isn't. The
feud is the selling point, seeing these characters interact.
First off, I'd have Sting turn heel. Well, not a complete "I hate you fans all of the sudden" heel turn. I'd have a shades-of-grey thing going for both Sting and Undertaker, like Lesnar and Taker as of late. @HeadlessPete mentioned something like this in another thread and I can totally see how it could work:
Undertaker is standing in the ring, the lights go out (a page out of Taker's book) and then we see Sting brutally assaulting Undertaker with a baseball bat. Later, Sting cuts a self-righteous promo about how Undertaker is no longer the man he used to be because he had to cheat to get a victory over Brock Lesnar. (Should have done this at Summerslam in a better finish and wrapped up the feud there, but it can still be done at Survivor Series). Sting says he is the reaper who has finally come for The Undertaker' career; Undertaker just has to decide how he wants to go out. As a victorious legend who won decisively, or as a pathetic old man who lost at Wrestlemania
again?
Undertaker returns and tries to get revenge on Sting, going as far as to challenge him for a match at Wrestlemania. Sting escapes harm and says he will accept the match on one condition: it will be both men's final match. Taker hesitantly accepts, and once again Sting asks him to think about how he wants to go out. The next few shows can feature both guys playing mind games with each other, just showcasing the stuff that made people want to see them feud.
(In reality Sting and Taker will only show up for like... 2 shows in the whole build, but fuck that, this is fantasy booking dammit)
At Wrestlemania 32, Undertaker wins and then shakes hands with Sting afterwards - both men satisfied that they got what they wanted. Then they leave the ring to respectful applause.
I was a fan of
TNA Sting's heel run in 2010 and I feel he can really carry this feud if given the chance. Not that any of this matters anyway, we're probably getting Taker/Lesnar 3. But it was fun to post about something I want to see.
