I have heard of this guy but had never seen any of his videos before. They're fucking stupid. I don't understand one bit how he got so popular.

I'm going to let the marketing discussion go, because it's late, it makes my head hurt the logic that's being used at times and it's just not an argument that's going anywhere. As for right place, right time, well yeah. Luck and timing are a huge part of just about anybody's wealth and fortune that they built. Henry Ford came around at the right time. If he were born 50 years later he probably would have missed the boat and not been nearly as successful. Same goes for guys like Bill Gates or Steve Jobs. I mean timing really is everything.

I'm not sure why you think this. There are several Youtube commentators, especially in the gaming field, that started after PewDiePie (2010, and with that said... I'm not sure why you are acting like he was the first of his kind) and managed to soar in popularity.

One of my favorite commentators, ModernWarNegro (now The Black Hokage) started his channel in 2012. He got invited to E3 last month. PewDiePie rose in popularity because his channel is friendly and unique, which is what separates Youtube commentators. It has nothing to do with it being easy or solely because he was in the right place at the right time.

real nigga talkin sit yo ass down

That wasn't his original name by the way. Just FYI. He had another account prior I believe. PewDiePie isn't the first of his time. Uberhaxornova was on the 'Craftin' scene before him. He comes in, IT'S PEWWWWDIEPIE, brofists his twelve year old fanbase and propels to the top.

Wow, you can actually make money by doing this?!

Fair play to him although it's tinged with jealousy that he was able to see the opportunity and make the millions out of it.

I'm all for people trying to create something for themselves using the tools they have available - of course, I guess this is a different means to do so but just because it's gaming doesn't mean the accomplishment can't be diminished as he's probably spent time marketing it very well.

Good for him.

I can't help but laugh at those who are actively deriding him over this. Sport icons such as Roger Federer and Michael Jordan get paid millions of dollars each year just for wearing Nike merchandise in public. Meanwhile, thousands and thousands of workers are being callously exploited in manufacturing factories by these commanding corporate entities for under $2 a day. That is unfair. That is wrong. That is truly disheartening. Pewdiepie is doing what we've all dreamed - having a job that fulfils our creative impulses whilst getting paid a more than adequate amount. This is one of the (few) beneficiaries of capitalism. It's the only tool that can generate mass wealth for individuals, and he's utilised its opportunities. He should feel proud, thankful and lucky.

Does he deserve $7.45 million? Perhaps not. Then again, does an executive working for Nike or Monsanto or GE deserve his or her multimillion dollar paycheque every year? Absolutely not. Does the CEO of a multinational corporation who heartlessly take pride in exploiting third world labour or fuelling war or raping the natural resources of our environment deserve his or her billion dollar net worth? Hell no.

The amount of hysteria I have seen surrounding this relatively inconsequential issue is just staggering. It shows where our priorities are at, too. No problem ardently criticising a harmless bloke making $7 million dollars a year on Facebook and Twitter, but when it comes to the numerous big businesses, corporations and conglomerates who do a lot worse for a lot more, we all remain quiet and uninterested.
