Characters that never reached their potential

Postby Str8Shooter » Mar 23, '14, 8:43 pm

So yeah, throughout the years of sim-fedding there have been many characters and writers that have come and gone, fleeting instances of success but didn't quite pan out the way it could have or should have.

I'm going with kneecaps Damon Jordan. A character that got off to a flying start and was over from the beginning, the inclusion of the Knockout Punch finisher and the "Boom" catchphrase. Won the International Title and all looked well, then kneecap disappeared and just like that, Jordan's shooting star career was over.

Loved Damon Jordan. Remember I tried to really put him over at Battlefield in the one match we had together. Seemed to really be ready to skyrocket and think I might have even mentioned him as a contender for the next year's battlefield.

Mebah is a guy who was always on the cusp of breaking into the Main Event picture but never quite made it, which was unfortunate because he was a strong character and had a good writer behind him.

I'm gonna mention Matsuda as well. Not that he didn't have a good run, he was around a couple years and had a Middleweight title reign, but he could have, should have in my mind, been a surefire Main Eventer for a long time. wweireland was an awesome writer, top notch matches and promos when he got the chance.

Too bad that right when the Yakuzas split and he could have gotten his big break he left and we're left to wonder.

Shane Evans - though not for reasons Str8Shooter could help.

When Tim and Brett decided to step down and I remained on I'd assembled a new booking team and the WCSF was in a highly transitional period that ultimately wound up not working. The first goal we had was to do something that would capture people's attention and re-start things with a bang which is how bringing forward the Battlefield tournament came about. I think people knew the WCSF was on it's last legs at the time which is why we never managed to find that spark again but I still think the tournament was awesomely booked.

At the time the most interesting part of the show (for me at least) was Delroy Andrews. Aky was on fine form with him having just beaten Dynamite to become number 1 contender for the title but as the Logan's had departed Andrews felt he should have been named the new champ. When that didn't happen he repeatedly claimed injustice and as punishment for his petulant behavior his Battlefield opponent was kept a secret from him. When Battlefield came around Andrews' mystery opponent was revealed to be Shane Evans and as he couldn't prepare for an opponent Delroy was beaten.

Kaiser Cavanah had maintained his ascent to the top and I think everybody knew it was a matter of time before he became World Champion and I think 99% of people figured he'd win the Battlefield tournament. Cavanah was booked to become champion but we decided to throw a little curveball to surprise people and so having Shane Evans return to pip him to the post was really cool. Evans and Kaiser (in my opinion) are each others greatest rivals and I think everyone would agree that both characters were ready for the main event and the world title so it almost felt poetic to have Evans come back.

We also had Mark Thomas in his home-town, Mebah finally getting his hands on Knight, the PPV return of Bale, Devine and Foster had a nice match that was set to foreshadow a carefully crafted feud me and Goff had intricately planned out, the Battle of Britain between Daz and Dynamite, I know it doesn't mean much to anyone else and again at the time interest was sadly at an all time low but I was really chuffed with the booking of this card and watching it all come together, finalizing with the two bitter rivals Evans and Cavanah facing off again...this time for the World Title, seemed poetic almost. Shane Evans won the match, an accolade both Brett and the character deserved.

BUT

Prior to Battlefield Aky had informed me that he was looking to take a hiatus from e-fedding and so plans changed. We had Evans face Kaiser in a rubber match for the very last time in a title rematch the very next night and Andrews, seeing Evans as the embodiment of every single injustice that had happened to him, cost him the title he'd worked so hard to win. The plan was then for Evans to feud with Andrews, culminating in a Loser Gets Fired Ladder Match at the next PPV.

I just felt that it could've been a huge year for Shane Evans and the feud with Andrews would've been awesome to see and so that's why I'm saying Shane Evans as the guy who never reached his potential but again not through any fault of Brett's - the WCSF closing stopped Evans from reaching his true potential, perhaps we'll see him in PCW one day.

Looking back the booking at that time may come across as a bit of clusterfuck but tbh the WCSF at that time was a clusterfuck. Still, would've been cool to me at least :lol

I'd say Shane Evans, because he seemed like someone who could have become main event quite soon and who deserved it. Most of his peers had been given the chance and it seemed to be getting close to his time when the fed started to crumble.

Frazier is another arguable one, given that he never became champion despite being such a good character, but he had at least transitioned to the main event and was in some major matches and feuds.

Interesting to hear a couple people say Evans. I'd never even thought of him not reaching his potential. He was around for years, won tag titles, ended up winning the World title (for a day anyway :P ). He was a part of the biggest faction in WCSF history in the Mafia, he won the Battlefield tournament and was a Finalist another time. Kayfabe wise he had a pretty damn good career.

Also I had really good feuds and matches with Devine/Foster/Kaiser, etc.

But I can see where you're coming from, as his big break really hadn't gotten up to full speed before it was over.

I would say Shane Doane as the first and biggest example of the Unleashed curse. Had he stuck around he would have been big.

Going WAY back... I'd forgotten about that guy. But yeah, you're right, from what I can remember he was fairly impressive at the time. Forgot all about the "Unleashed Curse" too. For a long time we had people complaining that we were booking Unleashed as the "B" show to Mayhem, but the real truth of the matter was we were TRYING to put star power on the show, but people would disappear as soon as we moved them over there or as soon as they got pushed to main event level.

Not gonna lie, when I was catching up on WCSF shows before joining in 08, I preferred Unleashed to Mayhem. Even afterwards I think it was the stronger show.

I really liked Shane Doane, and there were a lot of cool guys like him during the Salad Days of WCSF. Jason Daniels, Chris Jackson, Samuel Silver, fun people. For some reason, Doane stuck with me, and whenever I get an opportunity, I will randomly try to insert his name into a promo.

The one thing about the CodyR scandal is that a lot of hisher character's were really good. Dylan Kyle, TBK, Kamikaze Strike, they were pretty good.

And I have to agree on Damon Jordan. kneecap's disappearance was just... weird. Kind of creepy.

Ali brings up a good one, Samuel Silver, Knockout was the writer. He was a fast rising star right when I first got into the WCSF. Unfortunately another one that disappeared without a trace.

The only reason I wouldn't include him was that he seemed to do a lot and his character went pretty far. One of my favorite all-time feuds I ever competed in.
