Favourite Lyric

Postby Kirbi » May 03, '14, 8:47 am

I was listening to some tunes the other day, and was struck by how much I liked one of the lyrics. It was from a Tom Waits song, Shiver Me Timbers:

The clouds are like headlines
On a new, front-page sky

It's cheesy, but I get a kick out of it! :D

So, I was wondering which ones other people like. I an effort to narrow the field, I'm going to say no full songs; in fact, nothing longer than four lines. Mayhap, there should be some other thread for full song lyrics if people are interested...

From the top of my head I'll quote the very start of 'Still Ill' by The Smiths. It's also not 4 lines so I've broken the only guideline given hahaha!

I decree today that life
Is simply taking and not giving
England is mine - it owes me a living
But ask me why, and I'll spit in your eye
Oh, ask me why, and I'll spit in your eye

That's the first one that sprang to mind though I'll be sure to have a think and come back and post them because quoting The Smiths these days feels so...douchey for some reason :lol

Good tune.

Morrisey's a douche, but that's no reason to stop enjoying The Smiths - after all, how many musicians are completely without douchery? :P

The Smiths have some great lyrics :cheers2

Also, Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen is one of the best written songs of all time. Awesome lyrics.

This isn't my favourite lyric, but it's one I have stuck in my head at the moment:

The tall blonde lets out a cry of despair says
Would have cut it myself if I knew men could climb hair
I'll have to find another tower somewhere
and keep away from the windows

- Sara Bareilles, Fairytale

Coming up with a favourite lyric is tricky, but this one from Mike Patton is definitely high up on my list:

You're perfect, yes it's true.
But without me, you're only you.

- Faith No More, Midlife Crisis

Reverend, Reverend
Is this some conspiracy
Crucified for no sins
An image beneath me
What's within our plans for life
It all seems so unreal
I'm a man cut in half in this world
Left in my misery

Those lyrics are so deep, the song itself is just so emotional but the first verse listed above just sets the whole song. I don't know why I love that verse so much but it hits me like a sack of bricks every time I hear it

Sure as hell wasn't “New Kids On the Block had a bunch of hits / Chinese food makes me sick / And I think it's fly when girls stop by for the summer, for the summer.” or anything by Avril Lavigne.

"I'm A Beast" by Lil Wayne:

Rapping is my hobby
My house has a lobby
My bitches act snobby
Because I feed them thousands
I know that didn't rhyme
But I'm only being honest

I never lived in fear I knew I'd die another day
I never viewed my life as something slipping away

This ride that takes me through life
Leads me into darkness but emerges into light

So what if I never hold you
or kiss your lips again
so I never wanna leave you
and the memories of us to see I beg dont leave me

If I leave here tomorrow
would you still remember me
for I must be travelling on now
cuz theres too many places Ive got to see
