It's illegal to sell alcohol in Ireland on Good Friday

Postby Hanley! » Mar 25, '16, 3:41 pm

Just wanted to share this piece of Irish trivia with all of you. The Irish are discouraged from drinking on Good Friday by our own government. Pubs are forced to close for the day, and wine and beer sections of supermarkets are sectioned off until the following day.

In some ways, my country is still very fucking stupid.

You mean suck up the alcohol before it's Sunday and we're not allowed anymore?

I'm glad I'm only part Irish and don't live there any more.

Luckily I do have a bottle of honey rum in the house. That'll do!

That's not the only way weird religious stuff has been written into our constitution either though. Another fine example: blasphemy is technically illegal here. It's not really enforced, because how the hell would you manage that? But that the law even exists is so dumb.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say this discouraging the Irish from drinking deal hasn't caught on.

They could start enforcing it by seeing which of their citizens type words like "hell" in online posts. Look out Steve, they're coming for you!

This is a fun article, citing the stupidest law in each of the 50 States, Ireland's not alone.

Yeah also @Hanley! there are plenty of states here in the US, mostly in the south, where it's illegal to buy alcohol on any Sunday, or entire counties where they're completely dry.

Well yeah, it's stupid in the US too. And I feel for the people living there. The other countries that are completely dry is kinda a different thing, because that's a big cultural difference.

In Ireland, we have a big drinking culture. When we socialise, we usually do it in bars, pubs and clubs. Even those who don't drink alcohol socialise in those sorts of establishments, because it's just what's done here. Tourists know us for this culture, so they'll often want to stop in the Guinness Warehouse or get a pint in Templebar.

This year we're celebrating the 100 year anniversary of the Easter Rising in Ireland. It's a big event, there are shows and demonstrations and there's going to be a parade. It'll attract a lot of tourists. Those tourists were probably pretty confused and annoyed yesterday when they realised that they couldn't pop in for a drink anywhere yesterday.

^Counties, not countries :P not sure how familiar you are with county structure in the US but basically just like the US is made up of 50 states, each state is made up of a certain number of counties that can also enact their own laws and ordinances.
