I Have Something to Say About Courage

Postby Ace » Jun 09, '15, 4:49 pm

Emma & I are back and I have to say something about recent posts I've seen online.

People who post pictures of Marines saying things such as, "This is my definition of bravery not a guy named Bruce becoming a female" make me feel like we live in a world of complete & udder judgement. ANYBODY in the military is brave for risking their lives; even those who don't travel to dangerous countries. Some of them don't get to be with their families because they're keeping us & our families safe. That being said, a man becoming a woman is ALSO very courageous. There are people all around the world who feel uncomfortable in their own skin because of how they perceive themselves. Someone like a celebrity who everyone is always 'keeping up with' transforming themselves is a positive message for those who are ridiculed for acting a certain way. It's a completely different kind of bravery. Being in the military shouldn't be compared to someone making themselves feel complete. Our armed forces are fighting for a country that should be able to be free in thoughts & feelings. God bless our troops & kudos to Caitlyn Jenner for finding her true happiness.

Well this sort of came out of nowhere :lol

I get what you mean, even if I don't really get why it's even a discussion point, I must be missing something.

I'll he honest, I think a lot of those posts about who "real" heroes are and that they deserve more recognition than Jenner, despite having a point that could actually be argued, are just hiding subtle trans-phobia behind those views.

Bruce Jenner becoming Caitlyn Jenner is a pretty big discussion point in America at this point. It's also relevant on some level because ESPN with their ESPY awards have decided to give Jenner their annual courage award. People have compared him to other people they deem "more courageous". People on social media have been arguing it should have gone to Lauren Hill a Women's college basketball player who battled brain cancer or Noah Galloway an American Veteran who lost two limbs and won Dancing With the Stars.

I'm sick of seeing the posts about "such and such is braver than Jenner," but I think I'm even more tired of seeing shit about Jenner, period. I get that it's brave and courageous to be who you want to be and what not, but I'm sick of it being on every news channel or website. I find many more things out there important than what some dude is doing with his junk.

I think this is the issue, not so much saying that so and so is braver but the fact that jenner is getting copious media coverage over gender surgery and there are thousands of other stories that could be covered that could be deemed more newsworthy.

In this situation, pop culture is overshadowing world news and its frustrating to some.

I don't want to go balls deep on this subject because I'm on thin ice. This Jenner story is way overblown. For example:

The runner up was way more deserving.

I do feel people would be more willing to accept the Catelyn Jenner story if it didn't have the stigma of the Kardasian name attached to it. It is brave to make such a major change in ones life, especially when you feel trapped in your own body for years. With that said, I personally think Lauren Hill was a much more courageous person. I know its ridiculous to compare the results of an ESPY award, but in my eyes Jenner is getting to live her life and Lauren Hill's was cut short. Jenner's family gets to see her and live in a area that is pretty accepting, while Lauren Hill's family has to accept that she is gone. Very different situations and probably would have been better for ESPN to just have both win the award.

Yeah I mean I'm kinda sick of the Jenner coverage also, I agree on that point. But my eyes roll so freaking hard every time somebody posts something like THIS IS A REAL HERO (US Marine picture). Give me a break, why can't it be both? I've been seeing this inane bullshit all over my Facebook feed.

It's like when people are like "oh, you're depressed? well at least you have it WAY better than people dying of AIDs in Africa." I mean yeah, that may be true, but that doesn't diminish the fact that this person has some serious problems themselves. It's the same sort of thing here. Who cares whether one person is more heroic? They're both admirable in different ways.

The only thing I disagree with is the use of the word udder instead of utter. Utter is something you say verbally, or in this case, means complete, an udder is where the milk comes from on a cow.

Carry on.

Jenner is by no means a hero, like a soldier for example. But she is definitely brave. There are many types of bravery and it shouldn't be measured by how much someone is risking their life for their bravery.
