Cleveland Browns should be under arrest for highway robbery: The real case

Postby The Legend » Sep 11, '16, 10:01 am

I can't believe this hasn't been mentioned yet, but as much fun as we had with them getting a first round pick for Trent Richardson they pulled a much bigger coup roughly two weeks ago. The Carolina Panthers traded a fourth round draft pick to the Browns for a punter. Let me repeat that: A FOURTH ROUND DRAFT PICK for a PUNTER.

I forgot about that, haha. Granted, he's a pretty darn good punter, but a punter nonetheless.

Browns have been doing great at stockpiling picks lately. This year's draft was great on paper, we'll see how it produces. Ron Wolf and Ted Thompson made the Packers a success by stockpiling picks, and Reggie McKenzie has done the same with the Raiders and they're on the cusp of a return to the playoffs. HOpefully it works for Cleveland too.

It wasn't an ideal trade, but calling it a "robbery" is exaggerating. Acting like it is worse than trading a first round pick for Richardson is laughable. Lee will contribute more to us than Richardson ever did for the Colts.

Panthers group of punters prior to Lee were absolutely dreadful based off training camp and preseason performance. Andy Lee is fantastic at pinning teams deep. Besides, we are a Super Bowl contending team with a loaded roster. Not every draft pick is going to make our team (we had to cut 2 players we drafted this year, thankfully we got them on our PS). Unlike the Browns, having 10+ picks in a single draft doesn't benefit us whatsoever. It was a deal that worked out for both teams. We got someone who will make sure teams aren't being granted good field position, in turn helping our defense tremendously, and the Browns got a 4th round pick as field position doesn't matter much for them because they likely aren't going to have much success this year and are looking towards the future.

So, it wasn't a great trade. Maybe not even a good one. But it fills a major hole on our roster. I said it on another forum. The way our punters looked in preseason, we would have lost a game or two because of them. They were that bad. I remember one punt where Scrifes, I don't know how he got so bad, punted it like 15 yards. That puts our defense at a huge disadvantage. So we went and got a top five punter.

Its a really good trade for Cleveland, but if the Browns should be arrested for that trade than Philly should be in solitary confinement for getting a 1st round pick for Bradford. That is robbery on par with stealing gold from Fort Knox.
