World Cup - Pick Your Best XI

Postby prophet » Jul 14, '14, 12:29 am

Figured we could pick our own best 11 from the tournament. Here's mine.

Howard (USA)
Lahm (GER) Hummels (GER) Vlaar (NED) Blind (NED)
Mascherano (ARG) Kroos (GER)
Robben (NED) Rodriguez (COL) Neymar (BRA)
Muller (GER)

So that's my squad. I chose Howard in goal rather than Neuer based solely on how vital I think Howard was to USA's progression in the tournament and Neymar because he carried Brazil on his back the whole way and they crumbled without him. The rest pretty much pick themselves.

Golden Boot: James Rodriguez - by far the stand out performer of the World Cup.

Best Team: Costa Rica - seems daft not to say Germany but for me Costa Rica are the team that deserve the most plaudits, completely written off from that start in one of the hardest groups and didn't falter once.

Goal: Van Persie vs Spain - as brilliant as Cahill/Rodriguez' strikes were the goal I most enjoyed was RVP's phenomenal header against Spain to draw Holland back level, wonderful skill.

Worst Team: Spain - terrible defence of their title.

I can't argue with your team except I would of had Ochoa in goal because performance wise he was top class whilst I don't really remember Neuer coming under the same sort of pressure Ochoa did.

I'd have a similar looking team, though I'd have gone with Neuer. I just think he's a better keeper than Howard. Hard to argue against any of those in your team, DeAndre Yedlin deserves a mention though.

I'd go with Neuer aswell. He's completely dominating that position for years to come.

Agree with the Best Player, Best Goal picks.

Best team I've gone for Algeria. Not best as in outstanding but just their effort, performances and reaching the knock-out rounds for the first time in their history. Also, admire them for them donating their WC bonus to the humanitarian efforts for Gaza. :clap in a tournament that was clouded at times with teams in bonus/wage issues, namely Ghana and Cameroon.

Worst team is Spain but I'd add Bosnia. Really disappointed they didn't make it out of their group after their spirited performance vs. Argentina. Unlucky with a goal disallowed in their penultimate game but expected abit more.

Golden Ball is Best Player, btw, Golden Boot is most goals (Which James did win and I feel he should have had both)

I'd take Neymar out and go for Klose in a 4-2-2-2 personally.

I feel the best team was Germany but if you mean favourite team of the tournament or best to watch I'd give it to 'Merica, it was a good time watching their games and getting over the top excited for them :tim

I'd agree with RVP's goal, brilliant pass and a lovely header to get on the end of it.
