United fans are also raving today because it looks like they're finally going to sign Herrera. Am I the only person that doesn't know what on earth this Herrera has done to warrant his reputation? I'm sure he's decent enough and will likely do well but he's largely unproven and isn't the gift to football they're assuming him to be...nor is Luke Shaw who despite being a top player with mammoth potential is no where neeaaaaarrrrr worth that much :lol

Agreed on both counts. I don't know much about Herrera, aside from him being vastly unproven.

TBH, if Shaw at the age that he is, can continue his development and spend the rest of his career with us then I'd say it's money well spent. I'm not entirely comfortable with the fee and wages but it's English players always over-priced. Rio Ferdinand was bought for £29m and you could say he's justified, what was at the time, a record fee for a defender I believe so if Shaw's deal works out in those parameters then I'm not going to say no.

Herrera was a player Moyes had identified towards the end of last season but left it late, resulting in bogus agents working on behalf of us trying to do the deal. Admittedly, it's abit of a surprise of the Herrera deal as I expected LVG might have not been keen on any other pre-existing targets besides Shaw and I'm sure he's looked at Athletic Bilbao under Bielsea so it's a good, promising signing. Great to see Ed do what he should have done last summer, i.e. get a player before their value goes after a certain date.

Herrera played well against us in the EL two seasons ago, and is more importantly a MIDFIELDER. A position we need to strengthen.

Whatever the price, Shaw would be a great addition to United.

Just to update this, the developments coming out of the Man United camp this evening is that they've agreed a fee with Southampton for Shaw for 30 million.

Inflation these days. Just a few years ago a club probably could have signed someone of Shaw's quality for 10 mllion max. The transfer market these days is crazy. It could potentially be a great signing depending on how he develops. Going forward he can be very impressive but I have my reservations about his defensive qualities.

Herrera is someone I have seen very little of but hopefully he is worth what we paid for him. We certainly signed a player for a position which we need anyway. I have reservations as to whether he can play at a "world class" level given that he is 24 and has yet to earn a cap with the Spanish national team. However, Del Bosque seems to show tremendous faith in players who have won championships with Spain over the last six years (its my only explanation as to why Torres went to this world cup). So that might explain why he hasn't been chosen on occasions. Only time will tell anyway whether he is worth it!

Shaw is a long-term investment sort of signing. I think he'll improve defensively and having Evra around will help take the pressure off if he struggles at the start.

Reason Herrera hasn't played for Spain is because of the quality in strength in that position. But he's represented Spain at other lower levels and it seems before his time so he's got quality. He's 24, and I think considering we were linked with Fabregas, Herrera will turn out to be a better long-term option.

I realise that the Spanish squad has been littered with talent over the past few years. But my reservations in signing him more so moves to the fact that we have spent 30 million on a relatively unproven player. It would have been great to have signed someone who is actually competing to get into a top quality international side over the past couple of seasons, the kind of player and character United need at the club in my opinion. But like I said, I am willing to wait and see how it turns out. He could end up being a gem. Lets just hope its not money wasted like Fellaini, ha!

Jordi Alba joins Barcelona for 11 million.

Luke Shaw today join United for 30 million.

Yet discussion after the World Cup was about how the league is filled with foreigners which as a result stifles the growth of the young English players. Is it any wonder clubs look abroad for talent when the English players go for a fucking bomb? Saints want 30 million for Lallana too which is another hilarious sum for an Englishman when you can get a better player abroad.
