UK Peeps, EU Referendum. You in or out?

Postby Twister » May 26, '16, 12:52 pm

We got our polling cards through the post this week. I don't know what to do, there's so much conflicting information on both sides, but I'm leaning towards in.

It seems like the main reason most people want to vote out is due to immigration. Apparently leaving the EU will solve all our so called immigration problems. To me that's not really a good enough reason to leave. And statements such as "We need to make Britain great again" and "close the borders!" don't really do it for me. I kind of want to see us stay in just to see all the Britain First types froth at the mouth in outrage :D

What's everyone else voting for?

In.

Not read a convincing reason to vote against - the economy could go backwards and it seems it would be difficult to do business not being in the EU and more bureaucracy negotiating deals outside it. Plus, the justice we saw for the Hillsborough victims wouldn't have been possible for not being in the EU, specifically article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights. Anything that helps people uncover injustice is a yes in my eyes.

Plus it seems it's the Tories/UKIP/Far right who get their arse in knots about being in the EU as it goes, like you said, on topics of immigrations and "our laws". Watch the rhetoric turn on these sorts of issues in the build up.

There's so much bullshit being thrown around by both sides and I'm not sure who to believe.

The 'Out' party and their supporters seem to only care about immigration rather than anything else, which suggests they're just using the referendum as a way to enforce their thinly-veiled racist views. So I'll probably vote in, as seeing Farage and a bunch of other racist right-wingers lose out would be hilarious.

The Out side hasn't voiced a sensible argument yet, and as others have stated, seem to be using the referendum to express some serious xenophobia. The In side aren't doing a much better job, despite having logic on its side.

So, because if my parents very bright idea of giving me an Italian passport when I was younger, even though I was born and would ultimately be raised in this country, I am considered an Italian citizen and therefor am not allowed to vote on this referendum. Italian passport or not, I find it odd that I can't vote a big decision like this in the country I live in.

Think it's about time I try and get me a British passport.

One thing that's good coming out of this referendum is that it seems be causing divisions in the Tory party with 50 MPs calling for a leadership contest if Cameron is able to be the victor of the referendum even if he wins it a small margin. If he loses it then those calls become even louder. About time his party has this internal feuding, always seemed too rosy. I think Remain In will win by a convincing majority though - Leave doesn't seem to have any big momentum. If Remain win convincingly then you wonder what the fuck the point of the whole thing was besides appeasing Cameron's Euro sceptic colleagues and UKIP.

That sucks, does that mean you can't vote in general elections and stuff too?

I can vote in the general elections. It would just appear stuff like this I have no say on.

I actually into getting a British passport and it seems like so much hassle. Apparently, being born in this country alone doesn't grant me the right to a British passport. I am only eligible for one if one of my parents was born in this country before 1983. Which one of them were. But I need my birth certificate plus both of my parents birth certificates. It's nuts.

It's voting day tomorrow - whether it's remain or leave, get out and vote.

I remember the dejection after Cameron cruised to a general election win last year so hoping Friday morning will bring good news for Remain but fear those people not voting or vote for Leave based purely on immigration and "let's take back our country and laws" might get Leave the victory. I don't think people realise how big a decision this is.

This video is worth a watch:

Other highlights include Gove claming John Barnes was for Brexit then the latter responds emphatically that he's not.

Talking to my girlfriend's mum about the referendum yesterday. One of her reasons for wanting to leave the EU was because she believes in democracy, and dislikes that the EU has officials that weren't elected. Meanwhile, she fucking loves the queen and the rest of the royals, who coincidentally, weren't elected.

My girlfriend's grandad says he knows some Polish guy who earns £1200 per month washing potatoes (!) and sends back £1000 of his pay to his family in Poland every month. He said this was disgusting because British money is leaving our shores and going to other countries. I pointed out the fact that he went on a month-long Caribbean holiday earlier this year and spent almost two grand in various Caribbean restaurants, shops and at one point, a casino. He seemed quite pissed off when I mentioned this, can't think why.

John Oliver did a video on this, which is hardly extensive, but does address some of the bullshit reasons that people are using to justify leaving in the first place.

I'm really hoping Britain aren't bigoted enough to go ahead with this, because that sadly seems to be what this is boiling down to with a lot of voters.

The fact some people don't seem to realize is that even if we live, we're still going to be beholden to the EU rules and regulations and everything else, because we'll still need to trade with them. We'll still need to have people from European companies coming over here to work, otherwise our NHS would be even more understaffed. We'll still be putting money into the EU, without getting anything out of it.

Foreign companies that are based in the UK because of our position in the EU will likely want to relocate. Leaving would be absolutely crippling to our economy. And given the fact the Tories haven't coped for the past however many years in the EU, instituting their austerity measures that have made sure to fuck anyone not in the highest tax bracket, does anyone truly believe they can rebuild from the ground up if we leave? Cause I certainly don't.

This is fantastic. People are waking up and noticing the leash around their necks being tugged by unelected eurocratic assholes.

This is the worst thing to happen to my country in my entire lifetime.

We're still recovering from the recession in 2008 and the pound has already plummeted twice as much as it did then in response to this vote. That's literally overnight. We're going to be economically unstable for a long time to come. We have a trade deficit, we import more than we export and and we've significantly weakened our position when it comes to negotiating new trade deals with countries outside of the EU. It's gonna take years to fully seperate from the EU and the economy is only going to worsen in that time period. We're 8 years on from the last recession and it's still felt in lower income homes. This could be another decade of finiancial struggle for the working class.

Beyond that, Scotland will likely try to vote to leave the UK again, there's talk of Northern Ireland doing the same given how split the vote was there. This could completely tear apart the UK. There will be civil unrest due to the outcome, it's already starting on social media.

Fuck off with talk of with talk of unelected eurocratic assholes. It's not the EU that caused 99% of the problems in this country, it's the fucking UK government itself. Cameron is likely the outs and Boris Johnson and George Osbourne are the likely candidates to replace him.Johnson is a clown of Trump like proportions who only a few months ago was singing a different tune when it came to leaving the EU, and Osbourne is the muppet who fucked the budget to begin with. Our country is exponentially worse off because of this.

Yeah, you might turn into that third world shit hole Switzerland. Much better than being part of a failing corporatist/protectionist regulation factory full of nameless faceless people you don't elect. If you don't want to be under Cameron you can vote him out.
