Instead, the servers make $10.00 an hour or %20 of their individual food sales, whichever is higher.

Considering the appalling wages that most servers get paid in America, this probably comes out to be a pretty good deal for these people. It's easier for the customer and more beneficial for the server. Wish more places would try out something like this.

It was actually kind of bizarre when i was in Europe last month, I had no idea that they barely tip/some places don't tip at all. In Switzerland they don't tip and I had no idea, so I tipped 20 percent on a tab and the server acted like I'd just cured cancer or something :lol

Funny how these customs differ from region to region.

We don't tip in Australia either.

Basically every time we go to the US there's this intense mathematical session at the end of each bill between the wife and I as we run some X factor like judging session on how good the server was.

I'll simplify it for you. Move the decimal point one place to the left, that's 10%. Double that and get 20% that's a pretty standard good tip.

So it's no longer based on service anymore? It's just a blanket 20% regardless of service?

That seems to be the way in America. The idea behind tipping is that it should be based on service, but the American custom to always tip high (around 20%) comes as a result of the terrible pay that these people receive. So it's understandable that the 20% is expected to a certain extent, although it does seem like a bad system.

Over here, tipping is more done based on how good your server is. If the server sucks, no tip is more than an acceptable thing to do. 20% would be a substantial tip that would only be given if the service was particularly good and you were feeling generous.

No it's somewhat based on service. If I get really bad service I'll probably tip around 10% instead of 20%, I don't usually go above 20%. I also, don't really have a particularly high expectation when it comes to service. It takes a lot for me to be disappointed in how service goes. I also was just simplifying things since you talked about a deep math session I was making the math easier.

As an Aussie, I'm with Chewy. It's a mathematical nightmare when I travel to the States, and I'm pretty good with numbers normally. It's even worse when on business, because often the business won't cover gratituties.

Just pay them a proper wage to begin with, include all taxes in the actual listed price, and everything gets along more smoothly. The Kentucky restaurant is half way there I think... but that's just my personal preference.

Sounds like a much better way of doing things, tipping isn't the done thing in the UK either although I know a few people who will leave a 'tip' after a meal aka: "keep the change". I have done this a few times especially if I feel like I've received good service but I've never given a specific percentage of the bill as a tip, it's usually a keep the change affair or what ever spare change I have on me.

Agreed, I'm not so dim that can't work out what 20% is! More so it was trying to work out where they fell between 10 and 20%. Was it adequate but she was pleasant? Was it quick but they were a bit mean?

My wife won't commit to 18% but she's happy with 16%? Are we going to be coming back, if so, do we tip a bit more so we don't have urine in our food?

And so it goes...

I think this is good news, since a lot of people tip pretty poorly in the US. Different from other countries as the
tips in the US make most of their salary as waiters.

I usually tip 20% if the server is extra friendly/really nice/does everything well. 18% usually. 15% if it could have been better. Rarely 10% or less - only if the server is a complete twat.
