There are definitely consequences for what people say, and more and more these days examples are showing. Gun threats, bomb threats, and such on social media are getting reported to authorities and people are getting in trouble. Some of them are warranted investigation, but some of them are also pretty outrageous, and totally blown out of proportion.
However I honestly don't think this is a "bunch of teenagers" thinking this is cool/popular. I think they are trying to ridicule that she got punished, and that she shouldn't have been. There's also no proof these tweets are all just kids, could be any age group.
I think she should definitely get punished because its no laughing matter, but at the same time I think the airport security is pretty ridiculous and a lot of these people probably think so too. 9/11 happened 13 years ago now, let's face it, a lot of people don't remember its impact, and even more people grew up not even knowing it happened. We are talking about college students these days who were 5 years old when this happened now... The effects of 9/11 is super sensitive and at the same time people are over it. Again, don't get me wrong, 9/11 or not a bomb threat on a plane is a serious matter. I am just saying while this is a terrible example, I can kind of see where some of the tweeter may be coming from.
Of course they could just be really really dumb people and I may be thinking too much. I don't know numbers, but in the 13 years that have passed, how many bombs threats have come to light? How many followed up? How many bombing attempts have been stopped since our ramp up in security for airplanes? These are all questions that make people want to ridicule a strict system that seems to give no benefit, and invade peoples privacy.
