528 Muslim Brotherhood supporters sentenced to death in Egypt

(CNN) -- An Egyptian court sentenced at least 528 supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood to death Monday on charges related to violent riots in the southern Egyptian city of Minya last August, including the murder of a police officer, the country's official news agency said.

The riots took place after a deadly crackdown by security forces on two large sit-ins in Cairo, where demonstrators were supporting ousted President Mohammed Morsy.

While the official MENA news agency reported 528 death sentences, other Egyptian media said 529 people were sentenced to death.

The semiofficial Ahram Online news site said it was the largest set of death sentences handed to defendants in the modern history of Egypt.

Not all of the defendants are in custody, according to EgyNews. The defendants can appeal their sentences.

The court also acquitted at least 16 other defendants.

Yeah I read about this and was honestly about to post it myself. They may have been involved in riots but this is more because they are "enemies of the state" then anything else.

This is incredible. Incredible that there is no outrage.

Had Mohammed Morsi, the ousted Egyptian President who the army decided they didn't like had done this there would have been an incredible storm of criticism and condemnation. But sadly, because the Egyptian Army are behind this (because they want to crush the Brotherhood like they have done historically) it's not really garnering attention. 528 people sentenced to death is unheard of well maybe in the eras of Gamel Nasser when he was playing a role in suppressing the MB.

Makes me really sick to my stomach. They were labeled a "terrorist" group without no proper evidence about the car bombing that happened earlier on in Egypt which the Muslim Brotherhood was accused of.

I mean yeah I agree with this to an extent, but that doesn't make this any less despicable.

Normally, I would agree with but when a country condemns 528 people to death when there is serious doubt that the legal processes have been correctly followed (again, their culture can't have vacant gaps in normal law procedures) then I think the West nudging them to wake up and follow correct procedures, in this instance, would be the right thing to do.

But luckily for Sisi and the Egyptian military they won't. A few polite words and off they trot. But if Morsi was in charge and he'd done this, they'd be sending their ambassadors non-stop to reverse it.

Judge recommends death sentence for 683 people.

Egypt's military doing what it has historically done, crushed the Brotherhood. Doubt the US, UK will be offering any real criticism of the ways these trials were conducted.
