1 big step forward, a million back

This is the stupidest thing ever. I have yet to hear one good argument as to why same sex couples should not be allowed to marry. All I ever hear is "God created marriage to be between one man and one woman." Well guess what, there is thing called the Constitution. In the Constitution, our forefathers declared a separation of CHURCH and STATE. Since the only argument against same sex couples marrying is a religious one then we are defying the Constitution and the principals that this country was founded on by denying rights to people based on a religious belief.

Bottom line, if you don't think it's right for two people of the same sex to get married, that's fine. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. However, you can not deny an entire population of people rights because of something you believe in. Here's an idea, if you don't believe in same sex marriage, then DON'T MARRY SOMEONE OF THE SAME SEX. It really is that simple. Gays getting married isn't going to take away your right to prayer and practicing your religion. This is a FREE country, NOT a Christian country.

It makes me sick that equal rights is still such an issue in 2014.

The thing that annoys me about people who feel this way is how they seem to think that this will have a negative effect on their eventually children. They seem to think being gay is contagious or something and that it's some kind of choice. This one guy at work said he doesn't think people of the same sex should get married because if they have children, they would grow up thinking that being gay is, in his words, normal, and that child will grow up to think that he/she should be gay. I really don't think that is how it works. What about all of those gay people who had straight parents? The argument just doesn't make any sense at all. People are born the way they are born.

I was having a conversation with this girl at work who supports Tottenham Hotspur. What with me being an Arsenal fan, we like to give each other a some grief. I once told her that I would rather my son be gay than a Tottenham supporter. (Which is true.) She was really shocked and said that I shouldn't say that. She now thinks that I have cursed my unborn son and and if he does turn out to be gay, it would be my fault. What kind of shit is that? I tried to explain to her that I don't think it's a curse being my son could be whatever he wanted to be. And I tried to explain to her that if he was gay, it wouldn't be because I "cursed" him, it would be because he was born that way and had nothing to do with me.

What makes it worse is that these people all claim to have nothing against gay people. Yet they don't seem to want them to have the same rights as everyone else. They don't want them to be able to get married and have children. They think its a curse if they are gay. This other lady from work said she has no problem with gay people but just wished they would keep it to themselves when they are indoors. Why should they? If two people are in love, why should they have to hide it when other people are allowed to show their affection to each other in public? They claim not to have anything against them but if that sort of stuff makes them uncomfortable then they do have something against them.

They don't seem to get that two gay men raising a child are no more likely to raise a gay child as a straight couple. That's not how things work.

It's just amazing to me to think that there are still people out there who think that being gay is a choice that people make, or something that they just pick up over time. It's like ok, when did YOU choose to be heterosexual?

I chose to be straight after I worked out I couldn't have Tamina.

On topic, the most bewildering thing about the US is how awesome it is in nearly everything and how completely fucking off it is in everything else.

Let take their illogical point and say it was a choice (which is clearly false). WHO CARES? If someone were to choose to be gay i still don't care if they get married. They are in no way hurting, interfering, or stopping me from living my life. Just once i would like some one to tell me how people getting married changes their lives. If only so i could finally have a real debate about it.

Stupid that this is even an issue these days. Let people live their lives how they wish, whether someone marries a man, woman or a tree it has zero effect on anyone else.

This is pretty on point, we're either the best in the world for that particular thing, or way fucking insane for that particular thing, with not a whole lot of middle ground :lol

I don't get why the American politicians are so insane and can't separate church and state. Why can't America just follow Canada's example and legalize gay marriage nation wide despite the views of certain segments? People don't have to like it, and like here many won't, but they'll have to accept it.

And are we really shocked people are ignorant hateful assholes? I mean the Civil Rights Movement lasted until the end of the 60's, I think, and black people still struggle for equality and acceptance today. Hell, Apartheid didn't end in South Africa until 1994 and there's still a huge amount of tension between races there. Natives have been shunned, mistreated and hated in North America since Europeans first settled the continent. And I know A LOT of people hate Muslims/Arabs on both sides of the Atlantic. Not to mention the heavy racism/xenophobia that permeates Asia.

I'd say we do a much better job of this than most countries, actually.

It's a good point this.

Whilst they may be a bit slower to do so than most western countries, if you would compare them to African or particularly Middle Eastern countries, they're awesome.
