TNA making a push to sign Rey Mysterio

In the past year, TNA has reportedly made a legitimate attempt to sign multiple top-tier former WWE Superstars, such as Edge, Alberto El Patron and CM Punk. Apparently the promotion is currently focused on trying to sign one major talent that recently officially parted ways with the company.

According to the latest issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, TNA is in the process of making a big play for former WWE Champion Rey Mysterio.

TNA reportedly tried to sign Mysterio just this past week, as both Dixie Carter and John Gaburick spoke with him about the possibility of signing with the company.

According to one source, both TNA executives tried to push the idea that they could get Mysterio’s merchandise into stores and assist him in getting television and film work.

Additionally, Carter and Gaburick gave Mysterio the impression that they would build TNA around him as the company’s long sought after Hispanic star. They reportedly told him that the deal would be a non-exclusive deal, as he would still be allowed to work for other promotions on days that do not conflict with TNA’s schedule.

For what it’s worth, the belief is that Mysterio will still be signing a contract to officially join Lucha Underground in the near future.

Seems like Lucha Underground would be the better option for Rey. TNA is definitely on the way down, while Lucha Underground is building a respected following, and as a god of Lucha wrestling he'd be a great fit, even though his physical abilities are very much limited at this point in his career.

Rey can't lace the boots of the guys on LU. Also why would someone build a company around someone who has a proven history of getting injured often and who can't perform anywhere near the level he used to? Having him on TNA I understand. Making him the top guy is ridiculous, there are so many great luchadors out there with their best years still ahead of them.

Rey in 2015 isn't worth signing. He has name value and nostalgia, but he's got maybe one or two years left in him. His knees are so messed up, he can no longer springboard. And it's not as if that name value is gonna move the needle in terms of ratings. It never has in the past. So why spend the money? You can get better in ring talent for less than half the price.

TNA should be investing in guys like Rich Swann and AR Fox. These are high flying guys with personality that you could rebuild the X-Division around. With Low-Ki, Kenny King, Andrews so on and so forth, you've got a good base to really revitalize the division that used to be their bread and butter.
