Impact Wrestling 6/3/15 Discussion Thread

Postby EmperorWu » Jun 06, '15, 10:45 pm

So let me preface this with the fact that I haven't seen Impact in a long time, and the few times I did it was only briefly. So I'm probably going to come into this like a new fan, and have no idea what's going on. Having said that I'm going to try to be fair and not shit on everything right away based on the reputation of the show. I've heard a lot of good things lately, and want to give it a fair shot. I don't know how many people watch the show but hopefully we'll get some discussion going like we did in the NXT threads we had going for a little while.

Ok this top five thing looks pretty damn cool. The ranking of contenders for the TNA Championship. They actually stress the importance of it, and hey who knew, make it feel like wins and losses actually matter. Not off to a bad start. I can't say I care for the ring announcer's voice, and the same thing can be said for Pope. Josh Mathews is pretty good though, I've always liked him. Overall I'm really impressed by the level of mic workers TNA has. Everyone was pretty good to great.

So the show kicks off with an acapella group in the ring singing Trouble. Which I assume is this EC3 guy's theme song. The lighting, atmosphere, and look of the group grab your attention right away. EC3 is magic. The second he walked out I liked him. As they sing his theme song he confidently strides out with two bombshells in his arms and a subtly smug look on his face. He even called them buxom blondes when he high tailed out of the ring. Which I found amusing. I can completely believe that guys speaks like that. He walks into the ring and joins in with the group singing his theme song, the look on his face is priceless. I'm instantly a mark for him. His whole campaign gimmick is very cool, and the balloons just added that cherry on top. This dude is great. The group sings for he's a jolly good fellow with the lyrics, "For he's the number one contender", while he spreads his arms out and soaks it in. I laugh. He starts talking about who wants to see Tyrus dance. I love this guy, that was a very amusing bit. :lol He's clearly a heel yet it seems he's won over a large part of the audience. I'd guess 40/60. Kurt Angle comes out, it was ok. The group saying "goodbye" to Kurt was great.

EY vs Lashley was OK. I really like how they keep selling how winning matters and it moves you up the contendership board.

I enjoyed Rockstar Spud's subplot of whether he's going to keep the X Division title or cash it in. He sells it pretty well. I liked the dorky fucker, he's adorable :D. I like the idea you can cash in your title for the main championship. It drives in the idea of working your way up, and lower titles being a stepping stone to the main event. However logically you kind of paint yourself into a corner each time you get a new X division champ I assume. There should at least be a time limit or something. Like you have to hold onto the title for 3 months before your cash in activates. Anyway Angle did a much better job on this promo and really sold why Spud would be foolish to cash in his title. Spud delivered a very heart felt promo and it really looked like he was going to cry, I found myself feeling for him. Then he turned the fire on! He's good, damn good.

The Dollhouse group is kind of interesting. I liked their story time like vignette, and the set and group have a unique look. They even have a cool background song that really sets the mood. Not bad. Taryn Terrell definitely pulls off the barbie look. The two other girls are cute, and they try to work it, I like some of the mannerisms. Brook Tessmaster wasn't bad. She put on a decent effort. Also I think I'm in love, I dig the rainbow gear. Overall I enjoyed the match more than any Divas match on Raw. Earl Hebner was good too. I like that he interacted with the wrestlers. The Dollhouse "night at the Roxburying" Brooks friend before the beat down cracked me up. The jawbreaker in the mouth was a nice touch. Terell's second promo was also good.

Random Thoughts: Chris Melendes or whatever is pretty a pretty decent talker. Rayne cut a good promo. Sky gave wrestling history's weakest mid kick for her crappy stunner. :facepalm I never found Love good looking, but damn does she look awful. She also has at annoying fake voice like the Bellas. Although it works for her much better. Sky is forever hot. Drew Macintyre with a beard looks pretty cool, great intensity in his eyes. Does Low Ki ever age? :P Drew's suplex from the Tree of woe position looked great. The match was Ok for the amount of time they gave six guys.

Wolves vs Dirty Heels was good. I disliked the chop spot though, it looked awful. I felt bad for Roode having to sell those shitty chops. The Enziguri to jackknife finsher looked bad. He clearly didn't connect. Then he did a super kick to Roode while he was in a delayed suplex but he clearly hit his partner's shoulder. lol I paused to write this, and then the announcer repeats what I just wrote. These Wolve guys seem like they can do better, or maybe the camera guys need to help them out. I liked Roode and Aires though.

EC3 has a cool entrance, and I like his music. Also Spud wrestles in a bow tie which is awesome. :D The Spud/Angle vs Tyrus/EC3 match was pretty weak. However EC3 and Spud had a few shining moments. It's obvious why these two guys are seemly the most exposed people on the roster. EC3 is a bonafide main-eventer, and Spud could be too.

Overall I really liked the show. They have a very solid roster of quality talent on the mic. I want to see more in the ring though. 7/10

I have really been digging impact for a while, the last one was weak though. The crowd was weak and the show was not a solid show. It has good moments, more than SD anyways.

If that was a weak show than it's probably not as bad as people say. I thought it was pretty decent. I'm glad to hear it only get's better.

I don't know why but the whole show felt off, normally the crowd is much more aggressive and the product as a whole responds to that. It didn't help that I was wrestled out that night with Impact, ROH, Lucha Underground and NXT all in one night.

Good lord that's a lot of wrestling. :lol

What do you know about the TNA fanbase? WWE, NXT, and Lucha Underground have such diehard fans. Does TNA have the same? I seem to remember hearing the people at the tapings were like extras or just random people who got free tickets. Not real fans of TNA or wrestling in general. Is that true, or was it at some point? I doesn't matter how good a show is if the crowd is dead. Do they have a good loyal fanbase really? I don't really know. All I've ever heard about TNA is mockery so it clouds my perception of them. I mean they have been around forever, but then I hear how much money they lose each year.

The fanbase is fairly die hard just like others with the exception of when they tape at "the impact zone" a.k.a. universal studio's Orlando. Then you get a buch of people who were handed free tickets to fill seats.

Look up some of there European tours and the recent tapings from the hamerstine (sp?) Ballroom in NY, the crowds are amazing and really show the potential of TNA
