Taker off TV until Mania? Good or bad?

Postby Str8Shooter » Feb 24, '15, 11:04 am

http://www.lordsofpain.net/news/wwe/WWE_Reportedly_Keeping_The_Undertaker_Off_TV_Until_WrestleMania_31.html

As of this week, WWE's current plan is to keep The Undertaker off TV until WrestleMania 31. Unless something changes, Taker will not be appearing on RAW or SmackDown to help build the storyline with Bray Wyatt.

The idea behind keeping Taker off TV is that we don't know where he's been, we don't know what he looks like or what his condition is so it will be a bigger surprise when he does appear at WrestleMania

Source: PWInsider

Does this help or hurt Taker's Mania match with Bray? Is Wyatt capable of keeping this feud afloat on his own solely with promos for 6 weeks?

I just don't get how they can expect people to give a single fuck if the guy isn't even going to bother showing up ONCE.

Meh, probably a good thing. Taker has never really done anything in recent years when he has turned up and I don't exactly know what much he can do in the next few weeks to make people interested - a lot of people will care anyway because he's the damn Undertaker and those that aren't interested certainly won't be swayed by one or two appearances on RAW.

Wyatt is strong enough on the microphone to sell what he's been told to sell and the spooky theatrics from both will be more than fine for most, me included. The mystery surrounding whether he'll turn up, what condition he'll be in and what he'll look like are pretty cool incentives for me. I'd rather have Sting and Brock appear on RAW than Taker.

It worked a treat for WMXX but couldn't care less if he appeared or not. He'll only use three words if he returned to RAW to Wyatt so yes, might be better if he didn't appear until Mania. How different will he look though? Might have grown his hair again possibly, but his reinvention ideas are abit thin on the ground I'd say.

Chance for Wyatt to carry the feud but this reminds me, if true, of WMXX when it was Kane who was the opponent for Taker's return yet it could have been anyone in the ring that night to do the job. This time it's Wyatt.

Ugh.

This is what I hate about modern wrestling, and particularly the build up to Wrestlemania. Nowadays we don't get any story. All the build up to a match needs is hype. They can just tell us the match is happening for five weeks in a row and expect that it's enough to make people want to see the match. There's no need to actually get people engaged in some kind of ongoing story. Nothing interesting has to happen. Nobody has to be emotionally invested at all. There doesn't have to be some kind of pay off to events that have happened over the last few months. The only thing that's important is that they announce the match a bunch of times, and let us know its happening. Basically the bare minimum.

Because after all, who wouldn't go out of their way to watch a match that they know is happening? Such people clearly don't exist.

I'm not trying to say that I think Undertaker's segments would be amazing if he came back now to build to the match. I'm sure he'd be involved in more of the same old shit. But better something than nothing. It'd be nice to see what kind of relationship these two wrestlers have before they fight. To get a broader sense of what the issue is between them. To see if they have any kind of chemistry.

The only reason I can see to keep Undertaker off television based on the description above is if he's going to radically alter his appearance in some way that will make for a cool spectacle when he first walks down the ramp. And no, I don't mean another freaking haircut, although apparently some fans will pop for that. :lol

So I would say a bad idea. I'm almost offended by the idea to be honest. Though probably just using Undertaker at all is a bad idea at this point. He's not in the best of shape these days and he's never been less relevant.

Bray's promo skills explaining why he wants to face Taker and inviting Taker to show up will be intriguing. Then when they get to WM, the fans can wonder "Will Taker show up? Will he be there?". That's intriguing. I think it's a good way to go.

Wait, the thing that's supposed to sell us on the match is the fact that it might not happen? :lol

I'm not sure that's a winning strategy, much as I don't care about watching the match. First of all, if the match didn't happen, people who paid for the pay per view would feel completely cheated. Second of all, the match is obviously happening.

I'd mark for an ABA return. It makes more sense now than ever with them claiming he may be broken and what not. Plus people always say that he looks too old and looks like shit as the Deadman, so might as well have him wear leather and shit, ride out on the bike and change it up.

Yeah, you pretty much said what I was going to say. If done right, it could actually be quite entertaining and make people anticipate Taker's return at Mania more. I just question whether WWE can keep Bray Wyatt from going off track between now and then.

In saying that though, the content for Bray's promos has been a little bit better in recent weeks. There seems to be a bit of logic to what he is saying, and they can be easily interpreted for the most part!

Yeah I agree, Bray has been solid and less shit-talky in recent weeks.

As I said earlier I'm actually pumped for the build-up and I'm hopeful that it'll be very entertaining with or without Taker actually showing up. My main concern is one I raised to Taj the other day, will the Taker theatrics be lessened by Sting's?

The content of his promos has improved, but not by much. Before what he was saying made absolutely no sense ever, so some level of improvement wasn't a particularly lofty ambition. Now he's just saying that people don't fear Undertaker anymore, and they fear him instead. Which is perfectly decent content for a promo. But it's not content for 10 promos, and its certainly not enough to build a feud.

I don't see how they can make the build entertaining by just having Wyatt cut near identical promos every week. Wyatt's promo delivery is awesome, but people do tire of them very easily when he runs out of things to say. We saw that last year in his feud with Cena where he started picking up "Boring" chants on a weekly basis.

I'm kinda shocked that anyone here thinks this is enough. They're doing literally the bare minimum and there are fans saying "sounds better than the alternative". Have our standards really fallen that low? Or are we just too jaded at this point to even hope for something that might genuinely be exciting or entertaining?

If I were building it and having Taker appear is a no-go, then I would mix Wyatt's promos with some matches in which he shows an absolute evil side and aggression we haven't seen before from him. I'd still hope to have Taker do at least a voice over promo where he could mix in with Wyatt to some degree.

Really the only reason to keep Taker off TV until WrestleMania is if there's a gimmick change involved, like WrestleMania 20. But even then, is there really any point of changing Undertaker's gimmick now when he's only around for one night a year?

Just because he's not seen on TV doesn't mean he won't be involved. I'm sure we would get some voice over work and stuff where we hear him cut promos but don't see him.

Even though I wouldn't be a fan of it necessarily, I could see the merits of Taker visiting the ABA gimmick one last time before retiring.
