Meltzer: Cena proposing to Nikki is a lot bigger than Cena/Taker

The argument being made is that WWE thinks Cena proposing to Nikki Bella at Wrestlemania would give the company a lot more mainstream coverage that Cena vs Taker would, and perhaps this was one of the main reasons that match was scrapped. Do you agree with this reasoning or not? Cause I don't.

I really wish the WWE would stop whoring themselves out for mainstream media attention at its most blatant. Wrestling has always been a niche market and WWE has found its greatest success as a counter-culture movement, not running towards embracing popular culture. People looking for popular culture can find it more readily and being done better in places outside of wrestling. If the WWE were to embrace that then becoming a part of the mainstream just happens organically.

I suppose in theory yeah what he says makes sense. John Cena is their biggest star outside of the ring, and Nikki is the biggest female star outside the ring. If he proposes it will likely get a bunch of mainstream sites and shows talking about it and featuring it.

Cena vs Taker would be big for a lot of wrestling fans, but not outside that bubble.

Mainstream coverage should be a secondary consideration rather than a primary one for the WWE. It's not like they need it.

If Cena wants to propose to Nikki, live on TV at WrestleMania then the cat's out of the bag and it would have been more of a moment had it just happened rather than leaked out so maybe suggests it won't happen.
