Overwatch

Is anyone playing it? So far I enjoy it. Wish it had more variety though in regard to levels and game types. However 21 characters, all quite unique, is pretty impressive. Great game.

Add me if you play on PC. EmperorWu #1231

Criminal that nobody is playing this, first thing I'll be doing when I get my internet back, played during the Open Beta and it was fantastic.

^ I have the game. I thought I had mentioned it in the c-box when talking about how Hanzo looks like Roman Reigns.

I love the game. It's fun as hell and kudos to them on making all 21 characters unique and useful. However, I'm concerned about its longevity. Doesn't seem like a game I'll care to play 5 months from now, but it'll ultimately depend on what the DLC (which is free) brings us.

My other issue with the game is the community, which isn't Blizzard's fault but still something people need to be aware of. A lot of people would rather pick someone like Bastion and his ridiculously powered turret than someone who fits in with the team better seeing as its an objective-based game. You can run solo at your own expense, but I would highly recommend going in with a team.

Aside from those two critiques, it's a very good game.

I guess I need to be sold on it. It just looks like a ripoff of Team Fortress 2 to me. Is this inaccurate? I just really don't get the hype.

That's just what will happen in quick play, I am sure when competitive play comes out people will be much more willing in those circumstances to pick a person who is worthy of team effort, and have a lot less single die-hards.

I also wonder about the games longevity, I have a handful of friends who got it, but I didn't even stick with TF2 that long, so I can't imagine this one would fair much better.

@Everlong Noticed this went unanswered, they're definitely similar games in that they're class based FPS and share a lot of the same kinds of game mode (Attack/Defend, Control Point, Payload) but I wouldn't call it a ripoff. Overwatch definitely does a lot to set itself apart and be a fresh take on that genre of game.

It has its own selection of classes (or 'Heroes' as this game prefers to call them) all with a good deal of creative flair and distinct play styles. In addition to unique weaponry like in TF2, each Hero has their own set of abilities and traits. Take Lucio for example, he's a Support with a music themed playstyle and is one of my favourite Heroes in the game.

Lucio can switch between two songs that apply passive buffs to any team members that have line of sight on him, either he increases their movement speed or gradually restores health to them. He can "turn it up" which greatly increases the effect of the buff given to teammates, so situationally it could be used to move your team to an objective quickly and obtain a favourable position or sustain their health while holding off an enemy attack. His ultimate "Sound Barrier" provides a temporary, massive health boost to any nearby teammates and if timed right can be the difference in a fight. I like quite a lot about Lucio's design, he's a really intuitive and creative Hero.

I suppose aside from the broader and more specialised selection of classes to choose from, the main gameplay difference between Overwatch and TF2 is that Overwatch is more ability driven whereas the bulk of TF2's variety is in weapon loadouts. Comparisons aside, Overwatch is a really well made game with an abundance of polish and some great ideas, I've been having a wonderful time with it.
